AXOR is a brand of the Hansgrohe Group. They ran a design competition for their customisable MyEdition Tap and needed a partner to help them manufacture the winning design – and we were able to help.
The AXOR MyEdition collection explores the idea of infinite design possibilities. The brassware has a special mounting plate than can be personalised with customer’s individual designs. The competition marked the 25th anniversary of AXOR and the winning concept “Waterscapes” was designed by Lebanese architects and designers Cynthia El Frenn and Yara Chaker (CY + YA). Their design was inspired by the patterns that are created in water when it interacts with sound.
We were then approached to bring the winning design to life. The brief was to create a design of radiating soundwaves passing through liquid and have it look like it was frozen in ceramic or glass.

I gave the team at Cornelius Creative a challenging brief, and they were able to deliver an outstanding solution, but more importantly did so in a highly professional and efficient manner. I would certainly recommend them for any product design or marketing briefs you have. It was a pleasure working with them.

The design process
We started by mapping out the radiating sound waves from 2D images and applying them to the tap surface using CAD surface modelling, positioning the waves differently over the tap surface to produce several iterations that were rendered and presented to the client for sign off.
We took care to ensure the organic wave profiles worked with the square edges of the tap, gently washing out the edges so there wasn’t a hard serrated edge on the tap. Once the client had approved the visuals, we 3D printed the part to test fit on the tap and presented to the client for final approval before working with a model maker to produce the final pieces.

Bringing MyDesign Waterscapes to life
We then engaged with our model maker and worked closely with them suggesting a best way forward for the final parts. We opted to machine the parts from solid acrylic and hand polished to a glasslike finish.
The parts were then expertly airbrushed with thinned paints to create the oil on water finish that was semi-transparent, allowing light to pass through the surface creating a true liquid like finish frozen in time
As a final step, we built the taps in our workshop before they were showcased in The Water Studio for Clerkenwell Design Week 2022 and for the duration of the summer.

We’ve been getting creative.
